How To Be A Boss In All Aspects Of Your Life

I walked into Nordstrom Rack right before the holidays to pick up some last minutes gifts for my family. As I was walking through the packed aisles, I saw a decorative pillow that had a couple words that described me perfectly — Boss Lady. Obviously, I bought the pillow for myself.

A boss lady or boss man isn’t just a leader in their career. They manage their lives with a high level of maturity despite their age, they take responsibility for their actions and they always get things done. Now I don’t have everything together all the time. Who does? But I am in control of every aspect of my life. And when I don’t have my stuff together, I quickly fix that situation.

Here are just a few ideas on how you can be a boss in your life:

FINANCES

I’ve never heard of a boss that ignores money. I think you should always be on top of your own finances despite the amount in your bank account. My philosophy is: You make better decisions when you’re prepared. Have an ample amount of savings. This may mean limiting yourself 1 or 2 drinks at happy hour instead of ordering 4. Open a Roth IRA. The earlier you start contributing, the more you gain in the long run. Contribute to your company’s 401(k) program, especially if they match! You are leaving good money on the table if you don’t.

CAREER

All bosses have a vision and voice no matter their job title. I know people with a “senior” title who are so afraid of stepping on people’s toes and they never speak up in meetings. This is not a quality of a boss. Someone who knows how to get their message across, at the appropriate time is a leader. A true boss has a vision for their career and isn’t okay with settling. They ask for their deserved promotion and raise and they don’t sit back on the sidelines.

FAMILY/FRIENDS

When it comes to the people closest to you, I think one of the most important things is being present. In your planner, write down major dates, such as birthdays and anniversaries. But also note things you don’t want to forget. One of my friend’s dad died last year. On the one year anniversary of his death, I called my friend just to see how he was doing. He said he really appreciated that I remembered. The smallest things, can have the biggest meaning.

ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIP

I don’t talk about romantic relationships on my blog because I’m a really private person and I think I’m still trying to navigate dating and everything that goes along with it. But I do believe in order to have your personal life in order, you need to have a strong sense of who you are as an individual. You can’t enter and be successful in a relationship if you have no idea who you are. A lot of great people break up because they aren’t true to themselves. Only you can shape your identity and I think you have to discover that before you become someone’s bae.

SELF

Don’t be that person who has everything together but you’re a hot mess on the inside. Take good care of yourself. Getting my nails done makes me feel so good inside. It’s my hour to get myself pampered and to reward myself. Find outlets that make you happy. This could be daily meditation, a yoga class, journaling or just getting enough sleep. Remember: When you ignore yourself, you will never have it all together.

Stay driven.
